Maverick Wines Pty Ltd. was established in 2004. The objective was and is to become one of the top premium boutique wineries in Australia.
Although the company is young, Maverick owns 100 acres of vineyards from the top terroirs across the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. Approximately half of the vines are over 50 years old, and many much older - at our Old Ben vineyard in the High Eden Valley we have 100 year old Shiraz, at our Greenock Rise vineyard on both sides of Greenock Creek we have Bush Grenache over 100 years old, and we even have some Riesling from the 1860s! For many years the fruit from these vineyards went into some of the top names of the Australian wine industry - they are now proudly incorporated into our Maverick wines.
Just as important as the acquisition of top terroirs is caring for them in close harmony with Mother Nature. All our vineyards are biodynamically farmed – the Trial Hill vineyard is certified biodynamic by NASAA (the National Association of Sustainable Agriculture of Australia), Greenock Rise and Barossa Ridge are certified organic, Paraview and Old Ben are certified organic in conversion, and our Vine Vale winery is certified organic. The combination of biodynamic viticulture, old vines (the average age of the vineyard is approximately 100 years old), and effectively dry farming results in very low yields which in turn give an intense fruit which is fundamental for making premium wines.
All Maverick's vineyards and the Maverick winery are recognised as organic by NASAA (the National Association of Sustainable Agriculture of Australia). In the vineyard we follow a programme of sustainable/biodynamic agriculture. We make our own 500 using cow horns buried in the vineyard, and apply this and the 501 after energising in our copper biodynamiser imported from Italy. We make our own organic compost, to replace the organic matter lost annually. This is supplemented by cover crop and general biodynamic viticultural practices, including the use of sheep as our effective undervine weeders! This, coupled with a programme of virtually dry farming, results in greater root development, a better ecosystem and a high quality/intense/low yield fruit which is the prerequisite for making top wine. Our grapes are hand harvested. All Maverick wine is made from fruit grown by ourselves, allowing us to control and optimise the overall process in very close harmony with Nature.
Our winery comprises 1-tonne to 3-tonne fermentation vats, allowing hand-crafted micro-fermentation by single vineyard lot in the traditional method, with regular pigeage and pumping over. The wines are aged in almost 100% French oak, evenly split between new, one year old and two year old. Our objective throughout is to make elegant, understated single vineyard single varietal wines which are in the Northern Rhone style and which are perfect either to be drunk by themselves or with food.
Production is limited by the individual vineyard sites. The wines are therefore only available in the very top outlets of the world's major cities. Our emphasis throughout is on delivering a tailor made product which combines outstanding quality and value.
