James Halliday says:

"An outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity, with a 5 star rating for at least 3 consecutive years." Maverick Wines are made 100% from fruit biodynamically grown from our owned vineyards in unique sites across the Barossa and Eden Valleys. The average age of our vines is over 100 years old. The combination of biodynamic viticulture and virtually dry farming gives low yields of intense fruit which in turn are the perfect raw material for making exquisite wines. Our winemaking is truly artisanal. The vineyards and the winery are registered as biodynamic/organic by NASAA (the National Association of Sustainable Agriculture of Australia). Our wines are fruit driven, but complex, elegant, the perfect accompaniment with food, and above all outstanding value. From the outset, Maverick has been a 5 star winery in the James Halliday Australian Wine Companion, and again in the 2013 edition has received 5 red stars, with no less than 5 wines receiving scores of 94 points and above.

    James Halliday Rating
  • Colour: Deep garnet/ruby red with purple hues.
  • Bouquet: Fragrant spice with concentration and depth. The old vine Grenache offers licorice, blood plum, raspberry compote and some blackberry notes.
  • Palate: Smooth and juicy, with a subtle luscious texture combining incredibly fine soft round and ripe tannins with raspberry and plum fruit intensity.
  • Vineyard & Vintage Comments: Our Greenock Rise Old Bush Vine Grenache vines have stood patiently in their ranks for 116 years, like the old centurions they are! This magnificent small 0.8 acre block has over a century produced Grenache of unbelievable complexity and intensity of flavor, which for the first time is allowed to express itself in a single vineyard single variety wine which is truly unique and iconic. This expresses better than words the history of viticultural excellence and enshrined in the Barossa. The wine has undergone long maceration in seasoned French oak which with combines with the incredible natural structure of the vines themselves and the underlying terra rossa of this one of the very top Barossa terroirs to give a truly iconic 100% old vine Grenache wine.
