2009 Maverick Greenock Rise Barossa Valley Shiraz

The 2009 Greenock Rise Shiraz displays the classic hallmarks of the warmer Greenock sub-region of the Barossa Valley. Deep red berry fruits, spice and chocolate nuances are supported by lifted, smoky, spicy oak. A great example of a full-bodied Barossa Valley Shiraz.

James Halliday says:

"An outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity, with a 5 star rating for at least 3 consecutive years." Maverick Wines are made 100% from fruit biodynamically grown from our owned vineyards in unique sites across the Barossa and Eden Valleys. The average age of our vines is over 100 years old. The combination of biodynamic viticulture and virtually dry farming gives low yields of intense fruit which in turn are the perfect raw material for making exquisite wines. Our winemaking is truly artisanal. The vineyards and the winery are registered as biodynamic/organic by NASAA (the National Association of Sustainable Agriculture of Australia). Our wines are fruit driven, but complex, elegant, the perfect accompaniment with food, and above all outstanding value. From the outset, Maverick has been a 5 star winery in the James Halliday Australian Wine Companion, and again in the 2013 edition has received 5 red stars, with no less than 5 wines receiving scores of 94 points and above.

Tasting Notes

    James Halliday Rating
  • Colour: Deep garnet red with brick red hues.
  • Bouquet: Powerful and opulent with ripe red berry fruits. Blackberry, spice, plums and cocoa combine adding additional layers of complexity. Maturation in new and conditioned French and Hungarian oak barriques provides a subtle infusion of smoke and spice notes to complement the dark fruits.
  • Palate: Beautiful fleshy berry fruits gift-wrapped in velvety, finely-structured tannins. Powerful, voluptuous and textured, the palate shows great concentration and length with deep red berries, dark chocolate and spice on the finish.
  • Vineyard & Vintage Comments: Maverick’s Greenock Rise vineyard is planted predominantly to Shiraz – a variety which thrives on the deep red loams and warm climate of this sub-region. Two small Old Vine Shiraz blocks planted in ca. 1950 form the base of this wine. The 2007 growing season was characterized by minimal rainfall and higher than usual temperatures. Very warm weather in February led to rapid ripening and onset of harvest. Intense colour and mature ripe tannin profiles are characteristic of vintage 2006. Fruit was harvested in early-March and fermented in small, open top fermenters. After pressing, the wine was matured in new (38%) and conditioned (62%) French and Hungarian oak barriques for 18 months. Proprietary bottle: For the first time this wine (as with all Maverick Single Vineyard Shiraz’s) is in a bottle specially designed by internationally-acclaimed Jasper Morrison.
