Tasting Notes

    James Halliday Rating
  • Colour: Black with inky wild purple edges
  • Bouquet: Deepest darkest plum concentrate with mint and background licorice. Nearly impenetrable at this age
  • Palate: Dense, rich, fine satin. An intense and concentrated wine, focussed on the mid palate, with a seamless transfer to the finishing stages showing a very long persistence of black cherry, blackberry and violets. There is a long wait until this one peaks.
  • Vineyard & Vintage Comments: A warm spring after a wet winter that replenished soil moisture led to an early budburst. The weather cooled for dry and mild ripening conditions, which were perfect for developing flavour intensity and tannin ripeness together. Typically this vineyard comes in early in vintage due to the sparse yield, and this year was no exception. This parcel was fermented with an inoculated yeast for a moderately cool ferment on skins of 10-14 days. Maturation in new to 3 year old French barriques after some early rackings and barrel selection brought it to bottling in early 2012
