2008 Maverick Old Ben Shiraz


The 2008 Old Ben Shiraz is a classic cool-climate Eden Valley Shiraz. Dark berry fruits, spice and savoury nuances are supported by lifted, smoky spicy vanillin oak. A great example of a full-bodied cooler climate Shiraz.

Maverick Wines are made 100% from fruit biodynamically grown from our owned vineyards in unique sites across the Barossa and Eden Valleys. The average age of our vines is over 100 years old. The combination of biodynamic viticulture and virtually dry farming gives low yields of intense fruit which in turn are the perfect raw material for making exquisite wines. Our winemaking is truly artisanal. The vineyards and the winery are registered as biodynamic/organic by NASAA (the National Association of Sustainable Agriculture of Australia). Our wines are fruit driven, but complex, elegant, the perfect accompaniment with food, and above all outstanding value. From the outset, Maverick has been a 5 star winery in the James Halliday Australian Wine Companion, and again in the 2013 edition has received 5 red stars, with no less than 5 wines receiving scores of 94 points and above.

Tasting Notes

  • Colour: Deep garnet red with inky magenta hues.
  • Bouquet: Pure Eden Valley on the nose. White pepper, dark berries, cherry and spice.
  • Palate: Fruit driven, yet elegant and understated with great texture and finesse. Subtle berry fruits, spice and savoury nuances are supported by lifted, smoky, spicy vanilla oak to give a wine which combines complexity with approachability.
  • Vineyard & Vintage Comments: The Old Ben vineyard is situated at approximately 430 metres of altitude on a gently sloping hillside in the High Eden Valley with wonderful Southern exposure. The skeletal soils are typical Eden Valley with schists, quartz and mica. The 2008 vintage was characterised by its brevity – the early February/March harvest across all the Maverick properties took 10 days instead of 10 weeks, and there was only time to take off the very best fruit. Yields and volumes were therefore extremely light, but the ripe fruit of great intensity resulted in a highly structured and complex wine, with the particular cool climate characteristics of the Eden Valley. Fruit was fermented in small, open top fermenters. After pressing, the wine was matured in new (25%) and conditioned (75%) French oak barriques for 18 months.
