2009 Maverick Twins Barossa Valley GSM

The 2009 Twins GSM is an amalgam of Grenache parcels from Maverick’s Greenock Rise vineyard and the cooler climate Trial Hill vineyard in Pewsey Vale. The result is a combination of vibrant, fleshy fruit and savoury textural elements.

James Halliday says:

"An outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity, with a 5 star rating for at least 3 consecutive years." Maverick Wines are made 100% from fruit biodynamically grown from our owned vineyards in unique sites across the Barossa and Eden Valleys. The average age of our vines is over 100 years old. The combination of biodynamic viticulture and virtually dry farming gives low yields of intense fruit which in turn are the perfect raw material for making exquisite wines. Our winemaking is truly artisanal. The vineyards and the winery are registered as biodynamic/organic by NASAA (the National Association of Sustainable Agriculture of Australia). Our wines are fruit driven, but complex, elegant, the perfect accompaniment with food, and above all outstanding value. From the outset, Maverick has been a 5 star winery in the James Halliday Australian Wine Companion, and again in the 2013 edition has received 5 red stars, with no less than 5 wines receiving scores of 94 points and above.

Tasting Notes

  • Colour: Bright, opulent deep garnet/ruby red with purple hues.
  • Bouquet: The wine exudes class with a Northern Rhone-like essence, with blackfruits, spice, chocolates and freshly turned earth.
  • Palate: layered with dark fruits, richly textured and supple tannin structure, an elegant style that builds complexity as it airs. A lengthy palate with a core of dark fruit giving poise and elegance.
  • Vineyard & Vintage Comments: Maverick’s Greenock Rise vineyard is situated on the gently undulating slopes of the Western Barossa while the Trial Hill vineyard is perched high in the cooler Eden Valley – indeed, Trial Hill is one of the very few Grenache vineyards in the Eden Valley which in normal years is too exposed/wet for this sun-worshiping variety, but which was perfectly suited to the heat wave which persisted throughout much of the 2009 harvest. Both vineyards produce Grenache of great character, albeit of very different nature – these “twins” are definitely not identical. A dry winter and spring followed by above average temperatures during the growing season resulted in a very short harvest with low yields and intense fruit. Grenache and Shiraz fruit harvested in March and April was of excellent quality and displays lovely ripe, silky tannins and great depth of flavour.
