2010 Maverick Twins Barossa Valley Cabernet Blend

All of the fruit came from 1.58 Ha of the biodynamic/organic Barossa Ridge vineyard behind the winery. The vines are on about 50 cm of Nuriap sand over medium to soft friable clay at the eastern foothills of the Barossa Ranges, meaning the roots have had to reach down for the water. After 25 years, the roots have located all the fissures and pockets of minerals the vine requires. Regular cooling gully winds from the Ranges relieve the heat of the day, permitting fresher acid balances and more intensity of flavour.

Tasting Notes

  • Colour: Rich bright ruby red
  • Bouquet: Big ripe blackcurrent and red flesh plums, with mulberry depths and sweet flower highlights, and a whiff of cocoa, toffee, and vanilla.
  • Palate: Full and soft approach with a lovely medium weight, well balanced, with a supple and understated cab power-structure that settles seamlessly into the finish of very long clean black fruit.
  • Vineyard & Vintage Comments: 2010 was a cracker year for cabernet in the Barossa Valley. A slightly cooler ripening period allowed the cabernet tannins to ripen fully in conjunction with the flavour and alcohol dimensions. The varietal parcels were vinified separately, with the exception of the Cabernet Franc which was co-fermented with some of the Cabernet Sauvignon. The Petit Verdot came in 3 weeks after the Cabernets. Fermentation was regular and cool with twice daily pigeage in open fermenters for 7 days. Elevage of 18 months in 3 and 4 year old French oak integrated the structure ready for bottling in late 2011.
