2011 Maverick Twins Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc (12 bottles minimum)

All of the fruit came from 1.58 Ha of the biodynamic/organic Barossa Ridge vineyard behind the winery. The vines are on about 50 cm of Nuriap sand over medium to soft friable clay at the eastern foothills of the Barossa Ranges, meaning the roots have had to reach down for the water. After 25 years, the roots have located all the fissures and pockets of minerals the vine requires. Regular cooling gully winds from the Ranges relieve the heat of the day, permitting fresher acid balances and more intensity of flavour.

Tasting Notes

  • Colour: Warm and rich ruby red
  • Bouquet: Big ripe blackcurrent and herb – classic cabernet on nose over background black fruit richness. Depths of berry and red flowers, and a whiff of cocoa, toffee, and vanilla.
  • Palate: Full and soft approach with a lovely medium weight, well balanced, with a supple and understated cab power-structure that settles seamlessly into the finish of very long clean black fruit.
  • Vineyard & Vintage Comments: 2011 is oft dismissed as a poor year because of the early rains, but cabernet in the Barossa Valley showed why it is so respected. The slightly cooler ripening period while the rains were on, followed by a month or so of the warm and dry Indian summer of March, allowed the cabernet tannins to ripen fully along with the flavour characteristics. The varietals were all co-fermented with some cabernet sauvignonas they all ripened roughly 14 April. Fermentation was regular and cool with twice daily pigeage in open fermenters for 7 days. Elevage of 18 months in 3 and 4 year old French oak integrated the structure ready for bottling in late 2012.
