Tasting Notes

  • Colour: A lovely deep fresh red with orangey tones
  • Bouquet: Brooding savoury and spicy, showing white pepper notes and deep black cherry
  • Palate: Soft, mid weight palate with some warmth, nicely balanced, with some relaxed flesh. Very smooth textured, even, and supple with a very fine grip and a length of plum flowers
  • Vineyard & Vintage Comments: Maverick’s Greenock Rise vineyard is situated on the gently undulating slopes of the Western Barossa while the Trial Hill vineyard is perched high in the cooler Eden Valley – indeed, Trial Hill is one of the very few Grenache vineyards in the Eden Valley. Both vineyards produce Grenache of great character, albeit of very different nature – these “twins” are definitely not identical, and their combination is synergistic and electrifying. The 2012 vintage was a very good ripening vintage for the typical Barossa styles, and these vineyards gave very good accounts of themselves. Fermentation was traditional as single parcels in small open fermenters at 25 to 30 deg C, followed by off lees maturation in old French oak.
