2012 Maverick Greenock Rise Barossa Valley Shiraz (6 bottles minimum)

At the northern end of the Barossa, but in the hills rolling out to Kapunda, this is the ‘Greenock red-brown earth’ of clay over limestone with all the water control that implies. The limited water and low phosphorous result in low vigour and small yields, gifting the magnificent intensity evident in this wine. This vineyard is managed organically.

Tasting Notes

  • Colour: Inky, wild
  • Bouquet: Complex and brooding nose showing black stonefruits of Black Doris plum, Grillotte cherry, with touches of black olive, herbs, licorice and chocolate.
  • Palate: Richly layered, richly textured dense fruit palate. Intense and concentrated wine, seamless transferring on to a very long and evolving finish with the fruit complexities persisting. There is a long wait until this one peaks.
  • Vineyard & Vintage Comments: A warm spring after a wet winter that replenished soil moisture led to an early budburst. The weather cooled for dry and cool, even, ripening conditions, which were perfect for developing flavour intensity and tannin ripeness together. Typically this vineyard comes in early in vintage due to the sparse yield, and this year was no exception. This parcel was fermented with an inoculated yeast for a moderately cool ferment on skins of 10-14 days. Maturation in new to 3 year old French barriques after some early rackings and barrel selection brought it to bottling in early 2014.
