2012 The Maverick (6 bottles minimum)

On the eastern facing slopes of the High Eden Ridge at 430 m, this vineyard is typical Eden Valley of grey-brown loamy sand over mottled yellow-brown clay with decomposing schist (quartz and rock fragments). This wine is drawn from 3.2 Ha over 85 years old, and a similar area 25 years old. The old vines in particular develop low crops of small intense berries.

Tasting Notes

  • Colour: Dense and intense red purple
  • Bouquet: Very perfumed – violets and small black plums over a dense background of fruit, spice and herb
  • Palate: Plush, elegant and dense fruit in a fine framework of layered and silky tannin structure. Very soft it moves imperceptibly to a long and lingering perfumed finish.
  • Vineyard & Vintage Comments: A warm spring after a wet winter that replenished soil moisture led to an early budburst. The weather cooled for dry and cool, even, ripening conditions, which were perfect for developing flavour intensity and tannin ripeness together. Typically this vineyard comes in early in vintage due to the sparse yield, and this year was no exception. This parcel was fermented with an inoculated yeast for a moderately cool ferment on skins of 10-14 days. Maturation in new to 3 year old French barriques after some early rackings and barrel selection brought it to bottling in early 2014.
