Steven Spurrier's Maverick Selections

Maverick Trial Hill Eden Valley Shiraz 2009

Superb depth of colour and surprisingly youthful for 2009, very fine expression of Christmas pudding spices on the nose on top of smooth blackcurrant fruit, superb smoothness on the palate and all the naural vigour of Shiraz without the alcohol of Grenache (a very balanced 14.5abv), this is an exuberant yet serious wine, quite ready now but will evolve very positively for another decade.  95/100.  2016-26.

Maverick Trial Hill Eden Valley Grenache 2012

Fine bright and quite deep red, quite fresh looking for Grenache, warm and spicy autumn fruits on the nose, black berries that continue on the palate with a controlled richness, even slightly creamy texture, with freshness staying right to the end, a vigorous wine but more elegant than expected and shows deep natural depth and class, just the 16% alcohol slightly overwhelms the palate on the third or fourth taste.  92/100.  2016-22.

The Maverick Barossa Shiraz 2011

Dense purple red, excellent concentration of black summer/autumn fruits on the nose and lots of vigour from low yielding old vines on the palate, rich and lots of grip for the future, a very good wine.  18.5/20.  2016-30.

Old Ben Eden Valley Riesling 2014

Superb fresh lemon colour, floral yellow fruits nose both citrusy and quite complex, same citrusy impression on the palate, lots of energy and depth and lots of Riesling complexity to come, a very good wine.  17.5/20.  2015-18.

Maverick Steiner Shiraz 2011

Very fine deep red with an attractive youing freshness, both red and black fruits on the nose and an interestingly briary texture that shows elegant leanness with richness to come, very fine purity of fruit and almost restrained for Shiraz yet all the power is there despite a mere 13.5abv, this is a very fine wine with pure vineyard and varietal flavours and nothing out of balance.  96/100.  2016-30.

Ahren's Creek Old Bush Vine Grenche 2012

Full rich red smooth and velvety looking, fine supple and ripe Grenache nose, exuberant but not over-done, good purity and vineyard expression on the palate with nice grip, youthful but tannins are ripe and balanced and a nice lift of acidity refreshes the palate.  14.5/20.  2016-22.

Maverick Trial Hill Eden  Valley Riesling 2013

Mid yellow colour but nice and fresh, white and yellow fruits and dry honey remaining, still tight and beginning to open up.  16.75/20.  2015-20.

Maverick Twins Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2011

Deep rich red, rich blackberry fruit nose, quite ripe, even lush on the palate and then the spice and grip of Bordeaux varietals kicks in, while the rich fruit remains, Barossa fominating Bordeaux to good effect.  16.5/20.  2015-18.
